$270,000.00 Settlement
It was the 4th of July in 2018 when Karla was in her home frying chicken on the stove. She had lived in her home for over 10 years! She previously noticed issues with her stove and reported it to her landlord multiple times, yet the landlord did nothing to fix it. So, let’s get back to Karla frying chicken. As she was standing by the stove, she heard a loud bang that sounded like a gunshot. The stove exploded and the building shook! Flaming cooking oil erupted from the stove and Karla’s dress caught on fire! She tried to get away from the fire, but she slipped and fell down to the ground. Thankfully, her daughter heard screaming and she was able to drag Karla away from the fire. The fire began to spread but it was extinguished soon after the explosion.
As a result of the incident, Karla suffered severe burn injuries to the right side of her body when the flaming oil spilled on her. She was diagnosed with third degree burns to her right foot, ankle, and leg. In total, the burned areas amounted to approximately 10% of the body surface. After a period of regular wound care, she underwent surgery to cover parts of her exposed skin with autograft in order to achieve the best long-term functional results. “My life has changed,” said Karla. “The doctor said that I will feel pain for the rest of my life and I do have nerve pain that hurts so bad to this day.”
After Karla’s accident, her friend told said, “You need someone to fight for you and that person is Adam!” Thanks to her friend’s recommendation, Karla contacted our team at PPID. While Karla was in the hospital, Adam brought her grapes and told her that everything was going to be okay. In that moment, she forgot about the pain and smiled at Adam for his sweet gesture. While Karla focused on recovery, The Case Handler team jumped into action! Although the landlord ignored Karla’s multiple requests to fix her stove, the landlord was quick to get rid of the stove after the accident. With the help of our Brooklyn burn injury lawyers, we successfully held the landlord’s insurance accountable and recovered $270,000.00 for Karla!
