- Ronnie from Bronx, NY
What Happened?
On August 31, 2018, Ronnie was working construction at a Brooklyn site on the third floor when a strong gust of wind caused an unsecured and inadequate Baker’s scaffold, which was situated on uneven Q-decking, to fall over and strike him in the back of his head. The impact knocked him unconscious. Because his back was facing the scaffold, he never saw it coming and had no chance to brace for impact. When he regained consciousness, his coworkers and safety personnel were by his side, trying to keep him awake. The FDNY placed Ronnie on a stretcher and safely transported him off the floor to EMS. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he was evaluated, treated, given pain medication, and discharged the same day.
Ronnie sustained serious injuries to his head, neck, shoulders, and back. The worst pain was in his neck, which he described as a constant aching sensation radiating into his upper extremities, accompanied by persistent headaches. His neck pain worsened with movement, making it difficult to drive, turn his head, or even look upward. He also experienced paresthesia with muscle spasms in both his neck and back. In addition, he suffered constant aching pain in his mid-lower back and shoulders, which worsened with prolonged or overhead activities. Throughout his spine, multiple disc herniations led to extensive pain management treatments, including injections, and ultimately required neck surgery on January 25, 2021. Due to his injuries, Ronnie was unable to return to work.
