What Happened?
On June 4th, 2022, Richie was operating an electric bike on Clarendon Road in Brooklyn, New York. When he reached the intersection of East 26th Street, a vehicle from behind struck Richie and fled from the scene! Richie was thrown about 10 feet in the air and lost consciousness when he hit the ground. He was not wearing a helmet or safety equipment at the time. Thankfully, he was able to get himself off of the street with some help from bystanders when he regained consciousness, but was otherwise not ambulatory at the scene due to pain in his right leg. Richie was taken by ambulance to the emergency room at Kings County Hospital Center where he was evaluated, treated, and discharged home the next day with pain medication, a brace, and crutches.
As a result of the accident, Richie suffered injuries to his right knee and right leg. Since he was diagnosed with a non-displaced fracture in his right knee (kneecap or patella is broken but has not moved out of place), he was instructed to ice his knee, stay non-weight bearing for six weeks, and keep his leg elevated for six weeks so that it could be repaired on its own. He was unable to stand after the accident without assistance. Two months after the accident, he was able to put some weight on his leg but not for very long. Richie experienced a lot of discomfort and had difficulty sleeping. He attended therapy and, thankfully, did not have to undergo surgery.
