What Happened?
Before going to work on May 21, 2022, Taylor stopped at a local convenience store to buy a cup of coffee. After taking a sip, he noticed the coffee was more blue in color. At first, he thought it might be a new blend, but shortly after drinking it, he felt a burning sensation in his lips and throat.
Taylor approached the female cashier, who informed him that the coffee machine was in the process of being cleaned and contained cleaning solution. The cashier took his coffee and removed the coffee carafe. By that point, Taylor was feeling ill and went outside. The coffee area was not blocked off and there were no warning signs indicating the coffee was unsafe to drink. Taylor notified his boss of the incident and, instead of going to work, went to the emergency room. He was evaluated, treated, and released several hours later.
As a result of ingesting the contaminated coffee, Taylor suffered injuries to his stomach, lips, and head. He was treated at the hospital and monitored by poison control. He received IV treatment and was observed in the emergency room for approximately four hours. His lips and throat continued to burn, and later that night he experienced dripping sweat and severe abdominal pain that felt as though his stomach had been slashed.
Taylor endured ongoing abdominal pain, bleeding, shortness of breath, and dizziness. Due to his persistent symptoms, he returned to the emergency room multiple times, was prescribed medication, and had to significantly alter his diet.
Taylor’s Long Island Food Safety Violation Lawyer
After everything Taylor went through, a friend referred him to The Case Handler team, and he reached out to us several days after the accident. The defendant attempted to dismiss the case, arguing that the coffee was not contaminated and did not cause Taylor’s injuries. They claimed their cleaning procedures only occur at night, not in the morning, and that they had no record that anyone ingested cleaning solution that day - despite the fact that Taylor urgently left to seek medical attention.
Despite their refusal to accept liability, our Long Island food safety violation lawyer proved the defendant was liable, and we successfully secured a $35,000 settlement for Taylor.
