- Kayla from Mt Vernon, NY
What Happened?
On August 30, 2024, Kayla was driving eastbound through the intersection of East 3rd Street and Union Avenue in Mount Vernon, NY. There were no stop signs in her direction, and she had the right of way to proceed. As she crossed the intersection, a car traveling southbound ran a stop sign and struck her rear driver’s side, completely shattering her back window. The impact caused Kayla’s vehicle to spin out and collide with another car coming from the opposite direction. Kayla was transported by ambulance to the hospital, where she was evaluated and treated before being released the same day with pain medication.
As a result of the collision, Kayla sustained injuries to her neck, mid-back, and lower back, and she suffered from post-traumatic headaches. She experienced constant neck pain and back pain, with pain radiating down her right arm, accompanied by numbness. She also had stiffness and difficulty bending due to her back pain. Medical evaluation revealed evidence of a right L5 radiculopathy, a condition where a nerve root in the lower back becomes irritated or compressed, causing pain, numbness, and weakness in the leg and foot. In addition, Kayla was diagnosed with bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome and advised to wear hand splints to relieve her symptoms. When conservative treatment failed, she ultimately required lower back surgery in January 2025.
