What Happened?
On December 8, 2023, Emilia was working in the back of an ambulette, seated next to a patient who was on a stretcher. They had just left the hospital around 10:45 p.m. to take the patient home and had been driving for about 10 minutes when Emilia suddenly felt and heard a loud “bang” in the rear that shook the entire van. Thankfully, she did not fall during the impact. The ambulette driver and the driver who hit them exchanged information, and the ambulette was able to safely complete the trip to drop off the patient. Once they arrived, another worker took over for Emilia. The next day, as her pain worsened, Emilia went to the emergency room, where she was evaluated, treated, and released several hours later.
As a result of the accident, Emilia sustained injuries to her lower back, primarily on the right side. She experienced increased pain with prolonged sitting, bending, and twisting, along with difficulty sleeping. An MRI of her lower back revealed a herniated disc and multiple bulging discs. She underwent minimally invasive pain management and followed a home exercise program that helped improve her condition. Thankfully, surgery was not required.
