- Rebecca from Staten Island, NY
What Happened?
On September 20, 2022, Rebecca was visiting a friend in Staten Island, NY. When the crossing signal was displayed, she began walking across the intersection of Richmond Road and Old Town Road. At the same time, a pickup truck with a green light turned left from Old Town Road and struck her. The driver claimed that Rebecca wasn’t in the crosswalk and had stepped in front of the vehicle, making the collision unavoidable. Although Rebecca admitted to walking “along the edge” of the crosswalk, she had looked both ways before crossing and was halfway across the street when she was hit. Initially, Rebecca went home, but as her pain intensified, she was taken by ambulance to the emergency room. She was admitted to the hospital for 15 days.
Due to the pedestrian knockdown, Rebecca suffered severe injuries to her neck, back, and both legs. She experienced stiffness and pain in the neck that radiated into both shoulders. She also had pain in her mid-to-lower back, with radiation down both legs. A medical examination revealed a lower spine compression fracture, along with multiple herniated and bulging discs in her lower back and neck. Despite pursuing conservative treatment, Rebecca remained severely symptomatic. As a result, she underwent spinal surgery (posterolateral lumbar fusion) on April 10, 2023. While the surgery improved her condition, she continues to experience significant back pain and is permanently disabled.
